Frequently asked questions.

How is this different from the therapy I’ve already tried?

Our clients report better-coping skills, feelings of self-love, an increase in positive body image, and deepened understanding of themselves after treatment. Some clients even report relief from chronic pain and physical discomfort. Though some clients have gone off of their medication after finishing their treatment with us, that may not be best for every client.

Our therapists are specialized and trained in psychedelic healing, in addition to their existing accreditations. They’re experts in helping clients unpack their complex psychedelic experiences so they can build new thought patterns for long-lasting relief. They help clients through treatment, every step of the way.

The following research highlights studies based on the use of ketamine alone. However, clinical experience and retrospective analyses, including data from Field Trip Health’s clinics, indicate that combining ketamine with psychotherapy enhances treatment outcomes and prolongs the benefits. This combined approach often results in higher response rates and more sustained improvements than ketamine alone.

Efficacy in Depression and Mental Health Conditions

  1. Longstanding Use and Recent Studies: Originally used as an anesthetic since 1962, ketamine has been researched since 2000 for its potential benefits in low, sub-anesthetic doses for mental health conditions. It has shown high efficacy in treating depression, PTSD, and alcohol use disorder, supported by numerous clinical trials. Read more.
  2. Comparison with Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT): A landmark study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found ketamine to be non-inferior to ECT for treatment-resistant depression, with fewer cognitive side effects like memory impairment. This has led to discussions on using ketamine before ECT due to its better safety profile. Read the study.
  3. Effectiveness in Treatment-Resistant Depression: Review papers and meta-analyses have confirmed ketamine’s efficacy in treatment-resistant depression. Notably, Singh et al. (2016) demonstrated a 67% response rate with a standard protocol of twice-weekly treatments for three weeks. Further details.

Impact on Suicidal Ideation

  1. Reduction of Suicidal Thoughts: Ketamine has been shown to significantly reduce suicidal ideation, an effect validated by multiple randomized controlled trials. This makes it a crucial option in managing acute mental health crises. Explore the findings.

Applications in PTSD and Alcohol Use Disorder

  1. PTSD Treatment: In cases of PTSD, particularly those that are treatment-resistant, ketamine has demonstrated a high response rate, with 67% of patients showing improvement. Study results.
  2. Alcohol Use Disorder: Ketamine, combined with psychotherapy, has shown promising results in treating alcohol use disorder, with a phase 2 clinical trial reporting an 86% abstinence rate at six months. This finding is being further investigated in a phase 3 trial. Learn more.

Pairing psychedelics with the structure, support, and knowledge of an expert therapist turns a psychedelic trip into a therapeutic and healing experience.

You can think of doing psychedelics without a therapist like sailing without a compass. You may eventually find your way, but might get lost before you reach your destination. A therapist is like having a GPS on your healing journey. They guide and equip you with the tools you need to reach your goals, helping you to streamline your healing and get you to where you want to be.

A comforting atmosphere, careful preparation, and intention setting will minimize any unpleasantness that might come up for you.

To start, a low dose of ketamine administered in your first session helps to get you familiar with the sensations and feelings. Due to the exploratory nature of ketamine, some clients face challenging emotions, memories, visions, and experience intense bodily sensations.

Often these difficult experiences provide an opportunity to process the events and emotions that have been contributing to challenges in your daily life. This is why having a therapist available during your psychedelic exploration is so valuable – they’re trained to help you navigate emotional pain and discomfort.

Your medical needs and treatment plan is developed just for you. During your medical consultation and therapy intake, your medical team can address any concerns related to medications or substances.

Most antidepressants can be continued through the duration of treatment. We recommend avoiding some substances for 48 hours prior to your exploratory ketamine session unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor or cleared by your Field Trip medical team. These include alcohol, cannabis, opioids, NSAID pain relievers, stimulants, sedative-hypnotics, benzodiazepines, and muscle relaxants.

As all sessions are conducted with a registered therapist (psychotherapist, registered social worker, psychologist, registered clinical counsellor, etc.), you may be eligible for partial reimbursement under extended health benefits, depending on your employer or insurer's coverage limits. We will provide you with the necessary documentation to seek reimbursement from your insurance provider.

Our approach builds upon the effectiveness of traditional talk therapy. The combination of psychedelic medicine and talk therapy means our treatment can have an impact more quickly, and over a shorter period of time.

Ultimately, our program is meant to provide long-term relief from the pain of mental health conditions. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy is a powerful tool for healing.

In Canada, a doctor’s referral is not required.

1. Based on Field Trip Health Preliminary Data, 2020-2022

2. % of Field Trip clients with moderate to severe symptoms reporting improvements in symptoms after treatment who responded to Field Trip’s post-treatment questionnaire.
